Legal requirements apply according to which foreign degrees are recognized in the health and care professions.

The following requirements must be met by immigrants wishing to work in care:

  • Education: Health or nursing profession

    A completed education in a health or nursing profession

  • Recognition of specialized training

    Recognition of specialized training in the State Office for Health and Social Affairs (LAGeSo) Berlin

  • Requirements for recognition

    Prerequisites for the recognition of a diploma / specialized training in LAGeSo:

    The following documents are required in each case for the granting of the certificate of professional title:

    1. Written application for the certificate of professional title (please use the form of the LAGeSo).
    2. Tabular and chronological current curriculum vitae (with signature and date) with details of the completed training course, the professional career and other skills until today.
    3. Proof of identity (passport or identity card).
    4. Birth certificate (possibly a certificate of name change, such as a marriage certificate).
    5. Current official certificate of good conduct from the Federal Republic of Germany (document type 0, this must be applied for at the Bürgeramt (local City Hall) and may not be older than one month.)     9.     If no professional experience is available, a knowledge test must be taken in Germany.

  • Caution

    If you have completed your training for a medical profession in a THIRD COUNTRY , the following points instead of the above mentioned points 10.-12. to note:

    1.     3. Note: for speech therapists, knowledge of the German language must be demonstrated at level C 1 (certificate from Goetheinstitut, Telc or TestDaf, not older than 3 years).
    4. Proof of jurisdiction in the state of Berlin:
      • Employer’s certificate (confirmation of employment) about a job in the state of Berlin or
      • current register of residence records of the main residence / habitual residence (within the meaning of § 3 of the Administrative Procedure Act) in the state of Berlin.
  • Notes for all foreign diplomas

    The application documents must always be submitted in the original with a simple copy or in an officially certified copy. To certify copies in principle the citizen offices are authorized in Berlin as well as each authority within their material jurisdiction and notaries. Abroad, the German diplomatic missions (embassy, ​​consulate) are responsible for this. Certifications from other institutions or from translators are generally not recognized.

    • In most cases, for foreign documents proving the completed training (subjects and hours, certificates, diploma or all documents listed under point 10) the confirmation of the authenticity of the original certificates by the Hague Apostille or by the legalization by the German Embassy required.     • In the case when documents are not written in German language, an official translation must be attached in addition to the foreign-language documents which, if possible, should be produced by a translator who has been sworn publicly in Germany. If the translation is to be made abroad, it must be produced by the translator named by the respective German diplomatic mission. Frequently, lists are posted on the Internet at the responsible foreign representation.
    • According to the Ordinance on the Charges for Health and Social Welfare and Occupational Health and Consumer Protection (GesSozArbVGebO), the granting of state permission is subject to a fee.The amount of the fee depends on the current version of the ordinance. The certificate is chargeable, the fee is at least 164,00 € for the examination of training outside the EU
  • Application

    We recommend to send the documents by post to the address given in the application form. Due to the large amount of incoming applications, the average processing time is several months.
